To ring in the new year, we have encountered perhaps the least-anticipated genre- Serious Fiction. I’ve tried to read the sour, dour novels, the true epitome of adult literature, the kind of story that makes you think afterwards- perhaps something in the vein of Jodi Picoult. I’ve encountered the rare one that I can finish. Most end up being returned to the library with barely 30 pages read. Why am I working in this genre if it’s intimidating me like this? Because I never know what I may accomplish. I’m going to try it and see what happens. You don’t know what’s going to happen unless you try, right?

Thus, this month is going to be an experiment. Work seems to be gearing up to be slow this month so I’m going to take full advantage of the time to get a new routine going. And among other endeavours such as the gym and volunteering, I will be consulting Chris Baty’s book, No Plot? No Problem!┬ábecause I have no plot. It will become my bible. I think my story is going to start with my character having a baby but why? Why would my imagination pick that as a jumping off point? I have no clue but as with so many things in life, I’m going with it. I’m intrigued by what’s going to happen. I just really hope that I can finish it this month.

So, with January in full swing and not a word written as of yet, clearly some things have not changed. It’s never too late to turn a new leaf but why do that today when you can do it tomorrow? Oh the wise words of Lazy San…
